However, bryophytes have regularly been reported from various localities, and various workers from time to time made attempts to provide an account of bryophytes of Uttar Pradesh (Ahmad 1942, Pande and Ahmad 1944, Pande et al. 1954, Sahai 1962, Sahai and Sinha 1972, Srivastava 1964, Sinha et al. 1990, Singh et al 1990, Singh and Kumar 2003, Kumar and Kazmi 2004, 2006, Singh et al 2005, Lal 2007, Nath et al 2010, Singh et Singh 2015). Sahai (1962) described Anthoceros crispulus (Mont.) Douin from Gorakhpur. Srivastava (1964) described 10 species of Riccia from Uttar Pradesh. Srivastava (1978) described 10 genera comprised of 14 species from Allahabad city. Lal (2007) listed 70 taxa from Gangetic plains, of which 19 species are reported from Uttar Pradesh. Singh (2013) has listed 27 species of liverworts, 3 species of Hornworts, and 24 species of mosses from Uttar Pradesh. Sahu and Asthana (2015) investigated 29 species of bryophytes (About 21 of Mosses, 6 species of Liverworts and 2 species of Hornworts) from Terai region of Uttar Pradesh. Schwarz (2016) described 10 species of Family Funariaceae from Uttar Pradesh. Rawat et al. (2016) provided a checklist of mosses of the Gangetic plains of India, covering the areas of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, and included 79 moss taxa representing 40 genera and 19 families. Despite the unfavourable conditions prevailing in most of the state and gradually shrinking habitats, the bryophytes are still a part of the phyto-diversity of the state and require further studies in still unexplored areas to fully understand their diversity and status. The present report provides an updated account of 77 taxa belonging to 36 genera and 23 families of bryophytes of Uttar Pradesh. The taxa known from Gangetic Plains without proper locality are excluded here due to a lack of confirmed reports in Uttar Pradesh.
