Uttar Pradesh can be divided into three topographical zones (i) The sub Himalayan Tarai region in the north (ii) The Gangetic Plain in the center (iii) The Vindhya Hills and plateau in the south. The state is densely populated and most of its area is under cultivation while only 9.26% of the state's geographic area is under forest/tree cover. The temperature of the state fluctuates from 0 to 46 °C and the average annual rainfall in the state is around 65-70 cm. Thus the area is not suitable for the luxuriant growth of bryophytes.
